Is Lonza Advanced Synthesis the same as generic API manufacturing?

Not exactly. Lonza Advanced Synthesis is the service line that focuses on custom synthesis—often for smaller molecules, intermediates, and regulated starting materials. It's not just "react two chemicals together and ship." The team handles route design, scale-up, process optimization, and GMP production when needed.

From a purchasing perspective, that means the quote has to define the scope clearly. In 2024, we asked for a custom synthesis quote without specifying the phase of development, and we got a price that didn't include scale-up engineering or analytics. The lesson: if a supplier uses the word "advanced," ask what exactly is included. It's a lot easier to clarify scope before the PO than after the project milestones start.

How do I get a Lonza MSDS quickly?

"MSDS" is the older name for what's now officially called a Safety Data Sheet (SDS). According to OSHA (osha.gov), the SDS must have 16 defined sections under the Hazard Communication Standard. That applies to Lonza and every other chemical supplier in the U.S.

What is sulfuric acid chemical formula, and why should a buyer care?

The chemical formula for sulfuric acid is H2SO4—two hydrogen atoms, one sulfur atom, and four oxygen atoms. You can verify this in any standard chemistry reference, including PubChem (pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

But here's the procurement angle: the formula alone doesn't tell you the concentration, grade, or contamination profile. "H2SO4" could mean concentrated sulfuric acid or a 0.5N volumetric solution. They're not interchangeable. I've seen a purchase order that just said "sulfuric acid" and the vendor delivered the wrong concentration because no one specified N, %, or final use. That kind of mistake hurts.

Are Sika construction chemicals comparable to Lonza products?

This comes up more often than you'd think, probably because both companies sell "chemicals." Sika construction chemicals are used in building and construction—admixtures, sealants, mortars, waterproofing. Lonza's life-science side serves pharma and biotech with media, APIs, and custom synthesis.

That doesn't mean you can ignore chemical sourcing. You still need to know who makes the API, what quality systems are in place, and whether the regulatory documentation will support your filing.

When we worked with a franchise-model client, every vendor had to go through a qualification process. The cheapest API supplier saved about 20% on unit price, but the documentation review took eight weeks and required extra stability data. By the time we finished, the actual cost was higher than the qualified supplier we'd been using. That's the total cost of ownership lesson in real life.

Why do I focus on total cost of ownership (TCO) instead of unit price?

Because unit price is the most visible number, but it's rarely the most important one. TCO includes shipping, hazmat fees, cold-chain handling, documentation review, storage, QC testing, and the cost of being wrong. If a supplier delivers the wrong grade or can't provide a proper invoice, the reorder and delay can eat every dollar you saved.

  • What is included in the price—freight, documentation, packaging, and disposal?
  • Can they provide the required CoA, SDS, and origin documentation before delivery?
  • What happens if the shipment fails inspection?

Something felt off about that cheap vendor from the start—they were slow to answer emails and didn't want to send the SDS in advance. The data said "save money." My gut said "walk away." I ignored my gut. I don't do that anymore.

What's the one question most chemical buyers forget to ask?

"What is the vendor's deviation and return procedure?" You'll hope you never need it, but you need to know before you need it. I once said "we need this material by Friday" and the supplier heard "we'd like it by Friday if possible." Result: a delay that cost our lab more than the product was worth. We were using the same words but meaning different things.

Ask the supplier how they handle a rejected batch, a missing certificate, or a lot that goes out of spec. A qualified supplier will have a clear process. A supplier that only wants to talk about pricing is telling you something.
