What exactly is Lonza Pharma and Biotech?
I get this question a lot, especially from people who know Lonza as a pool chemicals supplier (that’s a whole different division). Technically, Lonza Pharma and Biotech is the contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) arm. They handle everything from early-stage clinical supply to commercial manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and biologic drugs.
They’re also a major supplier of cell culture media—RPMI-1640, DMEM, you name it. I’ve used their media formulations for years in client projects. The quality is fairly consistent, which is a big deal when you’re dealing with live cells. A batch failure can set you back weeks.
To be fair, they aren’t the only player. But that breadth—from small molecule APIs to biologics to cell culture—is rare. It’s part of why they get called a “leading” CDMO. It’s not just marketing.
Why would I choose Lonza over a smaller CDMO?
The numbers said go with a smaller CDMO—15% cheaper, faster communication. My gut said stick with the bigger player for this specific project. The client needed a GMP-compliant batch of a complex API with a tight deadline. We went with Lonza. Turns out the smaller CDMO had a capacity crunch we didn’t discover until later. The Lonza Shop is primarily for their catalog products—mainly cell culture media (RPMI-1640, DMEM, etc.), assay kits, and some standard biochemicals. It’s not a place to order a custom API. Don’t expect to find “ethylene” or specialty chemicals for industrial adhesives there. They have a separate sales channel for that.
The surprise wasn’t that the shop had limited selection. It was how good the search and ordering experience is. Saved product lists, repeat order functionality, MSDS downloads. It’s a B2B e-commerce experience that doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out. I’ve seen worse from much smaller suppliers.
One tip: double-check the shipping details. The shop handles hazardous materials differently, which can add 3-5 days to delivery if you don’t flag it at checkout.
What about industrial adhesives products? Does Lonza make those?
No. If you came here looking for industrial adhesives products, you’re in the wrong place. Lonza’s chemicals division does produce specialty chemicals used in adhesives formulations, but not the end products themselves. You’re probably thinking of companies like Henkel or 3M.
I’ve had clients mix this up before. The Lonza name is so broad—you’ve got pool chemicals, pharma, biotech, and specialty chemicals under one umbrella. It’s easy to assume they make everything. What is tech transfer in pharma? How does it work with a CDMO like Lonza?
This is the question most people don’t ask until they’re in the middle of it. Tech transfer is the process of moving a manufacturing process from one site (like your R&D lab) to another (like a CDMO’s production facility). It sounds simple. It is not.
Every spreadsheet analysis pointed to the budget option for tech transfer—the cheapest CDMO. Something felt off about their approach to documentation. Turns out, “streamlined” meant “we skip steps.” They didn’t transfer the critical process parameters. That set us back 8 weeks.
A successful tech transfer involves: 1) A detailed gap analysis of your existing process vs. the CDMO’s equipment. 2) A technology transfer protocol that specifies every analytical method. 3) A risk assessment of the scale-up (going from 5L to 200L is not just “bigger beaker”). 4) A minimum of 3 technical batches to validate the process.
Lonza has a fairly well-documented process for this. They even publish some guidance. The key is to start early. I’d say 6-8 months before your target manufacturing date is the minimum. Rushing tech transfer is how you end up with a 50% yield drop and a frantic call to someone like me.
So, should I work with Lonza?
I recommend them for complex APIs, biologics, or any project requiring consistent, GMP-certified cell culture media. If you’re dealing with a straightforward molecule and have a flexible timeline, a smaller CDMO might give you more personal attention for less money. The honest answer is there isn’t one “best.” There’s only “best for your specific project’s risk profile and timeline.” I’ve seen both sides work, and fail.
